WORDS FOR ARTICLE -

As the 40th anniversary of the bridge being officially opened by Queen Elizabeth which took place on July 17th, 1981, we take a look back this week to an almost forgotten date.....

June 24th, 1981, saw large queues of traffic on the roads around Hessle with many pedestrians hoping to take the walk across the bridge and back again, when the bridge was opened to traffic, eagerly anticipating their first trips to the south bank on what was the regions biggest building project in many years.

However on June 24, 1981 ¿nearly a decade after construction began and 50 years since the idea was proposed ¿the first traffic rolled over the Humber Bridge.

It¿ easy to lose sight today of what a landmark achievement this was.

These photos from the archives of the Hull Daily Mail give an insight into the work that went into it.

The bridge consists of two 155 metre tall towers, with 44,000 miles of suspension cables. Despite its height, it can tolerate wind speeds of up to 80 miles per hour ¿and its design even factors in the curvature of the earth, with the towers slightly further apart at the top than the bottom.

More than a thousand workers were employed on the structure at peak times, and construction came to an enormous ¿98,000,000 without inflation.

But it the benefits were clear as it cut the travel distance in half between the north and south with motorists no longer needing to travel all the way to Goole or use the Humber Ferries which sailed regularly between Hull's Corporation Pier to New Holland.

It was also something of a political miracle ¿ideas about a bridge had been kicked around since 1930s. Prime Minister Harold Wilson eventually agreed to sanction it to help Labour win a crucial by-election in Hull, and the rest is history.

Work on the Humber Bridge¿ foundations began in 1972. Plans to open the bridge in 1976 proved too optimistic, and it was another five years before it finally opened to motorists.

Visiting the banks of the Humber was a popular pastime during construction, as spectators tried to work out how much construction had progressed.

For 17 years, it remained the longest single span suspension bridge in the world, and is still the longest one you can walk or cycle across
