The Green Team have joined forces with a local potter to celebrate Newcastle? 30th year of involvement with the Britain in Bloom campaign. When Bloom sponsor, Ian Minshull of Black Star Ceramics heard about Newcastle? special anniversary, he couldn? wait to get involved and produce a bespoke piece to mark the milestone.
The sign is made up of 84 individual, hand painted ceramic tiles and features a vibrant, floral design. Ian? masterpiece has been installed in the old carpet bed area at the front of St Giles?Church and enhanced with colourful planting. Residents and visitors of Newcastle will be able to admire the special feature at this prime town centre location. Black Star Ceramics, based in Baldwins Gate, were first established in 2016, and pride themselves in making handmade items using traditional techniques. Pieces produced are unique and all materials and tools used are sourced locally. Ian, 45, said: ?? delighted to donate the sign in addition to sponsoring the bed. We?e had so much support from the local area as a business, and we live in the borough as well, so it? really nice to give something back.
? love my job. I?e made many things over the years but I love challenging myself and have always wanted to do something bigger like this. I? really pleased with how the sign has turned out. It? in a really nice place, one of the gateways into the town, so it should hopefully be seen by a lot of people. It? aimed at pedestrians as well as motorists. I hope everyone likes it.
?oth me and my partner are keen gardeners and enjoy wildlife so we really appreciate the Newcastle in Bloom campaign and what it stands for.?

Pictured are Chairman Ray Johnson, and Secretary Carol Gorton
Carol said "Today is his 154th birthday and we unveiled this beautiful statue in 2017 for his 150th birthday. We thought that today after all the lockdowns, now that we have a bit of freedom, lets do something. So we put out to the membership that it was going to be a nice day and that anyone that could get here should come along and wish him happy birthday."
