Subject - The Super Stadium in West Park, Hull 1999 to 2002.
As the name of the KCOM Stadium changes to the MKM Stadium, our weekly feature today looks back twenty years to the run up and construction of Hull's then newest focal point for sporting and events - what was then billed as the Super Stadium or Hull Community Stadium'; there wasn't a specific name for the stadium which was then due to carry the name of an unannounced sponsor.
The ?44 million project was mainly funded by money raised by the Hull City Council from the sale of some of its holdings in Kingston Communications, the country's only municipally owned telephone exchange.
Worked started in 1999 and was completed on time in 2002, for a grand opening match on December 18th of that year, named as the Kingston Communications Stadium, KC Stadium, KCOM and now the MKM Stadium
It occupies an area of the city with a long lineage in Hull's sporting history, the Circle which hosted local and county cricket and also Hull City in it's very early days before Boothferry Park.
