Fish, chips and peas
Highfield Chippy, 208 Robin Hood Lane, Hall Green Birmingham B28 0LG. . Verdict: +++++ This shop has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years to the point that it is very much like an old fashioned chippy with a queue to the door. It is concentrating on the dish that made this country famous ? and it is doing them well. The Highfield has even solved the old conundrum of how much you should buy to feed a family. Cod and chips twice with two pots of mushy peas is ?11.50 and not only good value but you get plenty for four people to share, too. A regular portion of chips is ?1.80 on their own, but the delicious chips in my meal-deal portion weighed 550g on my in-car scales and hit 70C on the chipometer even after a fair amount of time had been spent dividing the meals up inside the chipmobile. Cooked fresh to order the fish featured pure white flakes of cod inside a crispy, golden batter. The mushy peas had too much salt in them, but with lots of busy, happy staff behind the counter, Highfield Chippy is at the top of its game ? it takes card payments, too.
